Front brake pads are an important part of the braking system in your car. The pads are between the brake shoe and the brake drum. The brake shoe is what bears down on the tire to slow it down. The brake pads slow the wearing of the discs, calipers, and rotors. Brake pads should last about 30,000 miles depending on how much you use your brakes while driving.
When your brake pads need replacement, they may start to squeal, whine, or screech when you press on the brakes. There is a metal indicator that is in the brake pad and it makes a horrible noise when exposed so you know it is time to replace them. The brake pad is visible through your tires and if they are less than 1/4 inch in thickness, it may be time to replace them. You may hear a noise that sounds like your brakes are grinding or growling. This could mean that your brake discs are touching your calipers because the brake pad is worn away. You may have an indicator on your dashboard that alerts you it is time to have your brake pads, front or rear, checked.
If you do not repair your brake pads, it could lead to expensive brake system repairs. When your brake pads wear down, they can cause unsafe conditions for you to drive. Every time you press on the brakes, you create friction. This friction slowly wears away the brake pads and causes wear and tear. The brake pads get thinner and thinner which means the brake shoe may run against the drum.
